Top 10 Moments of 2010

Another year of Phillies history is in the books. Though the season ended on a sour note, there were many memorable moments during the year. Here are the top 10 moments of the past year. Feel free to argue with the list, but you’re most likely wrong!

Top 10 Phillies Moments of 2010

10.) Jamie Moyer throws a 2-hit shutout at age 47

On May 7th, Jamie Moyer set the record for oldest pitcher to throw a shutout thanks to his complete mastery of the Atlanta Braves. Only two batters reached base with one being eliminated on a double play. After being told of his record, Moyer responded “cool.” It is easy to understand his subdued attitude once realizing that he will be breaking that mark again in 2012 when he makes his triumphant return from TJ surgery. The quest for 300 will not cease! 33 to go…

9.) Phillies Acquire Left Fielder Roy Oswalt

Thank you Scott Barry for making this possible.

Roy Oswalt certainly deserves a lot of credit for helping the Phillies obtain their 4th straight division crown. But the moment that will stick out in the minds of fans is when he was forced into left field on August 24th against his old team. Before tossing Ryan Howard from the game, Scott Barry openly mocked the slugger like all good umpires should do before running a guy. With no players left on the bench, Ibanez moved to first and Oswalt trotted out to left field. And of course, this happened on the first pitch. Oswalt eventually made the last out in a 4-2, 16 inning loss, but no one can take away his 1.1 UZR/150 in left.

8.) Makeup Game Comeback in Coors

In early September, the Fightins were 3 games back in the East when they had to fly to Colorado for a makeup game before heading home to play the next day. With a Braves loss imminent, it appeared we had wasted an opportunity to pickup a valuable game. Joe Blanton got rocked and the Phils were down 7-3 heading into the 7th. It was tied up before an out was recorded thanks to blasts by Howard and Werth. Benjamin Francisco would give us the lead on a single before Utley hit a grand slam for good measure. The latter proved to be necessary as Durbin and Lidge gave us all a scare before finally locking up a 12-11 victory. The Phils captured the NL East lead the following week.

7.) Phils Light Up Santana

Despite all the collapses, disappointments, and failed FA signings, beating the Mets is still remarkably satisfying. 2010’s defining moment in the Phils-Mets rivalry occurred on May 2nd. Believe it or not, the Mets were a half-game up in first on the Phillies, with a 5-2 lead going into the 4th inning.  There was no hope of a comeback against the mighty Johan Santana (who said he was better than Doc before the season). Nine straight batters would reach with 2 outs in the 4th inning and 9 runners would cross in the inning. The final line for Johan: 3.2 IP, 8 hits, 2 walks, 1 strikeout, 10 ER, 4 HR allowed. Oh my!

6.) Walk-Off Werth

On September 19th, the lead in the NL East was about to be cut down to 2, with Atlanta coming into town the following day. The Nats called upon rookie fireballer Drew Storen to preserve the 6-3 lead in the 9th. Placido Polanco managed to squirt one through the hole, followed by a Chase Utley double. A Ryan Howard single scored them both to cut the lead to 1. Then came Jayson Werth. “Mr. 3-2” was patient as usual before inevitably running the count full. He then rocked one into center to preserve the 3 game division lead, walk-off style. Cadillac Time!

5.) Early Fireworks at CBP

Fireworks night, July 9th: The Phils are down 7-1 going into the 9th with rookie Mike Leake dominating. Howard drives in a run to make it 7-2. Still no worries for Dusty Baker, Leake isn’t even at 100 pitches yet! Greg Dobbs hits a 3 run home run, the score is now 7-5. Guess Dusty will have to wait for a different day to ruin the young kid’s arm; it’s a save situation, time for Coco! Cody Ransom then hits a 2 run bomb to tie the game up at 7 and send it into extras. Madson makes quick work of Votto-Stubbs-Bruce to send it to the bottom of the 10th. With Ibanez and Howard starting the inning, you know Dusty is drooling to bring in the lefty Arthur “I sucked in Philly” Rhodes. Arthur promptly gives up a double to Raul and a walk-off blast to Rhyno. The Phillies would go on to sweep the Reds, which would not be the only time that happened.

4.) Broxton railed AGAIN in another epic comeback

Alright, this one wasn’t completely Broxton’s fault. Entering the 8th down 9-2, the bats came alive. Four runs in the 8th knocked the lead down to 3. The last thing poor Jonathan wanted to see was a save situation. Broxton hit the first batter before walking the bases loaded. A hilarious error by Casey Blake allowed two runs to score. With the Phils down 9-8, Chooch stepped up and roped a 2 run double to complete the comeback. Broxton did not retire a single batter. If he doesn’t rebound next year, can we take credit for ruining this guy’s career? Or at least give the credit to this kid:

3.) Cliff Lee returns

Welcome back Clifton Phifer Lee. Nuff said.

2.) Mr. Perfect

Few things could have made me turn the channel during Game 1 of the Flyers-Blackhawks Stanley Cup Finals. This is one of them:

1.) Doctor No

How can a no-hitter possibly be a better moment than a perfect game?

    • During the postseason (2nd in history)
    • Against a better offense
    • Only one well-hit ball all game (by a pitcher of all people)
    • It was in Philadelphia
    • I was there

The reasons are in reverse order of importance.

Long Drive wishes everyone a Happy New Year! Be safe, drink eggnog, & watch Christmas Vacation and Santa’s Slay one final time. See you in 2011!

The Perfect game and No-No were my favorites, but that kid’s voodoo on Broxton had me hysterical for a day or two.

Another memorable moment was our sweeping on San Diego and us having our way with that bullpen into extra innings. Chooooch was heroic that night. Not 100% sure, but I remember Chooch taking a wild pitch to the throat and shrugged it off!!!!!!!!

I remember I was catching a blow job during the game Oswalt went to left field. Almost cracked that slut on the back of her dome out of excitement. Halladay’s no hitter will always be my favorite thing, it’s my birthday in the playoffs and he did that
